The other day I had gone to meet a friend. Despite my efforts to reach home on time, the Delhi Metro played truant and I got delayed. I called up the L&M and gave him the gist of the meeting and told him to keep a cup of ginger tea ready, my laptop switched on and the front door open. He didn’t ask me why, probably thinking that I had some kind of urgent work.
After bribing the autowala to take me home by the shortest route, I kept glancing at the time and fretting about being late. I had already missed the previous week’s session. As he dropped me at the gate, I thrust nearly double the fare on the meter into the autowala’s hand and ran home. I managed to sit in front of the computer screen at 3.15 PM and tried to catch my breath. A cup of tea appeared at the table and I barely glanced at the L&M as I took it. He peeped curiously at what it was that had me in such a tizzy!
So what was it that was so important for me that I went through all the drama? A Twitter session, of course! But wait! If you thought that I am a social media fiend, you are mistaken.
I had reluctantly joined Facebook and was finding it very hard to keep up with it trying to follow my friends and putting up status updates and replying comments. And when I thought I had got the hang of it I felt emboldened to try Twitter but soon realised that I was back to square one! Besides, Twitter was much faster than Facebook and a little more complicated to boot.
One didn’t like or share, but had to tweet and retweet; there were no friends but followers; the members were known by the quaint term tweeple; the convenient wall where you posted status updates was missing and replaced with a timeline that moved faster than the speed of light.
I watched from the sidelines, till one day I discovered a group. Founded by three online friends, The Sunday Book Club was touted as being fun, a place for book lovers who could discuss everything connected to books and interact with like-minded people on Twitter. (You can read more about it here and here.) Every session would have a topic and six questions were to be put to the participants who tweeted their replies and reacted to others’ tweets. Some of the topics covered so far include Favourites – books, authors, genres, etc., Books and Films, Book Covers, Travel Books, Biographies and Autobiographies and the Ramayana.
I decided to follow The Sunday Book Club or TSBC for short, albeit with much trepidation. I was sure that I would have nothing to say since I love books but am not passionate about them – well, except one book, but let me come to that later.
‘Never mind, just follow the discussions. I am sure you will find yourself joining in,’ Sudha assured me. ‘Who knows you might even win a book give away!’ (Every session has a winner who gets a book as a gift) Needless to say, I didn’t believe her.
The group was so informal and the discussions such fun that to my great surprise, I was tweeting like mad and getting replies and retweets too!
The most wonderful thing about these sessions is the exchange of information and names of books, why it is someone’s favourite, which perspective they like and so on. The topics selected are also well thought out, with ample scope to expand on them during the discussion.
The tweets are all fresh and unique and often witty in the extreme. There is friendly banter, leg-pulling and easy camaraderie, even as books and their merits and demerits are discussed. We find others liking what we tweet and retweet, even as we do the same and favourite the replies. However, the best thing is finding so many new people to follow and visit their blogs. With tweeple from across the globe taking part, it is an even more enriching experience.
The topic on that first session which I had joined so dramatically was Books and Films and the questions ranged from the best and worst adaptations to whether one read a book before or after watching its adaptation and so on. We hastily made notes to read/watch a particular work and shared more info on them. By the time I tweeted my reply or a comment, there would be dozens more waiting to be read. It was like an avalanche, no less!
Folks, before I proceed I have to go on a tangent and make a confession about the one book I talked about earlier. I love books of all types with special liking for young adult fiction and travel books, but there is one that is so special that I can bring it into any discussion. That book is The Outsiders (TO)! My favourite book? TO. The book you’d love to be stranded on an island with? TO. The best film adaptation of a book? TO.
Why, I could have even brought it into the discussion of Ramayana, which was the topic on one of the sessions. Let me explain:
Ramayana has four brothers of whom Shatrughna is the silent and invisible one, so in effect making them just three brothers. In The Outsiders, there are three brothers who are very close to each other a la the Ramayana brothers. The former fight wars, the latter have rumbles and both fight against the baddies. The oldest brother is the straightforward one in both….Ram and Darryl. I could go on and on. But back to the TSBC#
The one on Ramayana was among the best I have participated in till date, probably because we all know so much (?) about the epic. After going through questions like the various adaptations, perspectives and versions, the final question came up. ‘Give the story of Ramayana in a tweet.’ That one was a challenge. While I was racking my brains, there was an avalanche of tweets (so what is new?) And there was @Pentropy, who had been in his elements that day and he came up with this gem: Kheer se paida hue 4 veer, chalaye unhone teer, sita le gaya ravan, mamla hua gambhir, ravan ko diya cheer, aise the woh shoorveer. Little wonder that the tweet won him that day’s book giveaway!
Some of the others who have won books in the TSBC so far are @Modern_Gypsy, @IndiaBckpckMoto, @BannokiSaheli, @1morepageplease, @santoreeves and @thecybernag. Yes folks, I was declared the winner in the last session of TSBC! Can you believe it? Someone who thought she could not tweet to save her life, was actually a winner on a Twitter group discussion!
The popularity of the TSBC can be gauged from the fact that it trends every week near the top and last Sunday was trending above even the Tiger! And for those in the western hemisphere and others who are not able to join it live, there is a Facebook page too, where the questions of the week and other information are posted.

Imagine a guy who is active (but not addicted) on Twitter, Facebook, doesn’t blog (but writes blog-length comments that drive the technician behind this blog wild) and who has been personally invited for every session of #TSBC that has yet been held.
Now, guess how many of these sessions that person, ie yours truly, has attended. Yep, you guessed wrong – ZERO is the right answer.
In the past six weeks – and the forthcoming six for sure – I find myself highly occupied in the world outside the four walls doing something equally constructive. Although I am not happy for missing the sessions, I console myself that I am doing something constructive with my time rather than finding my nose stuck in a screen as it is throughout the week.
I have requested the #TSBC team to try hosting it on a Saturday once in a while – many people do have the weekend off and can participate if their Sundays are occupied, but considering the team’s availability, I can understand they may not be able to fulfill that request.
I’ve liked their FB page, but am yet to go there. I plan to at least answer the few questions they’ve put up there after the session, but then again, I’m as lazy on Facebook as I am in commenting on your blog.

I try to participate as much as I am able to, but then when I can’t I go to their Twitter page and try to see the tweets I missed. It is laborious and therefore I find it easier to be there when it is live, see? 😀
I think you can be there one Sunday for one hour. As it grows, maybe the timings might be changed when there are more requests.

Psst, GND, I have little knowledge myself when writers like Kafka and such are discussed. But the atmosphere is fun and there are no airs among the participants. So when I can’t contribute, I simply read and retweet the good ones. It is just the interaction that is fun. Try it sometime 🙂

Sudha urged me too to join in! I have the same issues that you had – not being one of the tweeple and finding that sitting at the PC for any length of time makes my eyes water! Plus, of course, my congenital inability to say anything briefly (140 characters, forsooth!) 🙂
The other problem is that my reading seems not to have progressed much beyond Grimm’s fairy tales 🙂 Salman Rushdie made me dizzy and John Steinbeck gave me a headache 🙂 Looking at the literature under discussion, I’d probably feel like a wee child popping in with comments in an adult discussion 🙂

FB is more personal, but Twitter is great if you enjoy the interaction. I am there only on Sundays for this length of time, else it is a quick look to see who in my circle has posted something new. I hardly am there on Twitter, Renu, except to RT someone’s post or reply to some interesting tweets. A maximum of maybe 15 or 20 mins in a day and that too not everyday. But one hour on a Sunday is not a bad idea to spend if you enjoy the company of like-minded people sharing a common interest, isn’t it?

Interesting. Congrats on your win. The book club sounds very interesting. I may join. I may not. Somehow I have kept off twitter though its been 2 years since I started my account. I am struggling to get out of Facebook itself. Internet addictions are the bane of students and working professionals in demanding jobs.

I know it is a bad distraction for students and professionals and others besides. But then, this is just an hour on a Sunday afternoon and unless it is snooze time, it is usually free. How about giving it a try? Not all in the group are as book-illiterate as I am, BTW, they are all really into them 😀

There was a time when I simply didn’t know what to read. Too many books in a bookshop or at the library made me feel lost. So I joined a (live) book club and haven’t been disappointed. Discussions are animated and often we vere completely off the topic but nobody cares. I always have plenty to read now. The online bookclub sounds like a good idea. Will take a peek. Thanks, Cybernag. Enjoyed reading this post – could sense your enthusiasm – very infectious.

The best things about the book clubs I think is the informal atmosphere and discussions. I have not been part of a live one, so I don’t know. It must be even more interesting, if anything. Do take a peek and join in the discussions. Sometimes when they talk of things I have no idea about, I simply listen in and get enlightened by the discussions 🙂

No…..My fav book is The Outsiders, by S.E.Hinton. Did you read the link which I have given to its review on my blog? I am sure you will love it Indu. One need not become addicted to social media if we use it judiciously. I have never been able to become too free in these platforms but such discussions are interesting and after all, it is just an hour a week, right? You should try it.

Oh that day it was really crazy! I was determined to be there on time but cut it a bit too fine while leaving my friend. And sometimes the Metro can just stop at a station for more than the stipulated time and this went on at many stations. So the delay. I needed that cuppa badly, see? I too checked out the review and am glad that I am getting that one 🙂 And oh, the tea ready part… 😀 This week the L&M wanted some poha upma and I replied without moving my eye from the screen that I would make it after 4 PM. But the session went on a little over the time period and he was like, ‘It is four! Where is my upma?’ 😀 The winner had not been announced and I had to rush to make it for him. In between I came to see the tweets and what do I find, but my name being announced as the winner? That was great! Hope to see you next time!

I have not fallen for the charms, it takes too much effort to condense your thoughts into 140 characters.Besides, I am not a social media addict — at least till now 🙂 But an hour a week is good fun, especially since it involves books and discussions on the various aspects of books and reading. There are many such witty repartees, which can be experienced only when one participates 🙂

I laughed so much after reading the introduction that I to wait before I could comment ! 😀 And I was not surprised to see that The Outsiders made it to the post here. But the Outsiders and The Ramayana? Now I really have to read the book and see the movie.
The TSBC on Ramayana remains very close to my heart and the response only reaffirms by belief that we all know more about ancient epics than we realise. I still remember your own doubts about being able to contribute or participate in this session. And you were not the only one.

We have all grown up on the stories and sub stories. I remember the old thatha who used to tell us the stories in the noon and then go on to give a pravachan for adults on the Ramayana. I loved those stories and when I had been very ill at the age of 7, unable to even move my limbs, my elder brother used to tell me the stories from Rajaji’s version. Incidentally his Tamil version of the same is a classic. As for the write-up, I am only sharing the fun I have there 😀

Somehow, I have consciously kept myself from another pet peeve. As it is, I FB and Pin the whole day and Twitter would make me worse. So, for now, it’s no Twitter. But reading your post makes me a wee tempted but I shall refrain.

Oh, I just joined to see what it was all about. I am a slow coach and so wasn’t sure about being able to tweet quickly enough and catch up with the fresh tweets, but it is so infectious that I was soon caught up in it. And Sudha indeed keeps count of the number of times we have attended/missed 🙂 amazing!

I read only non-fiction books and that too rarely. I guess I need to increase the frequency of reading books! Perhaps getting involved in a discussion like this might help? BTW, did you read Life of Pi? I want to know if one ought to read the book first or watch the movie?
